According to Ryan Hembree, the author of The Complete Graphic Designer, “ Drawing is essential to solving design problems since ideas must be translated from written form into images to communicate with the audience.” (The Complete Graphic Designer, 2006) Basically a piece of fascinating artwork, it always gets started with a sketch. Sketching is very important because it is like free writing. It is the best way to get ideas on paper and have a concept sample image of your ideas. Furthermore, it's also a way to develop an artwork how it can be looked like. But, how to produce an attractive sketch? Here are the steps that identify the steps involved in producing an attractive sketch.
First and foremost, a good preparation defines your final result. Get the right materials before starting your work. Just like with any art form, it is difficult to sketch when using poor quality materials. I am sure that everyone of you face the same problem on wondering what materials are needed most of the time. A complete drawing kit is essential. Do prepare your own drawing kit such as A4 or A3 size art block, a few graphite pencils of various grades which produce different types of tones and texture such as B or 2B pencil is use to darken and define the basic shape of your object while H and HB is to add in shadow tone and texture, a good eraser, black pens with various thickness, pencil sharpener and viewfinder etc. A viewfinder is a homemade cardboard frame that help us to concentrate the subject and eliminate unnecessary distraction. Just spend a little more money to buy a good quality drawing kit as its value beyond what it is worth.
Once you have done your preparation, the second step to producing an attractive sketch is choosing your object wisely where it can be anything and at anywhere. Understand what you want to draw and what you want to convey to others about what you have visualized in your mind. It can be easy and also difficult, but just do not waste too much time on choosing your object as you might get frustrated. Besides, make sure the surrounding area is bright enough for you to visualize and easy to sketch. Furthermore, position yourself comfortably. A good posture is also important as you’re not comfortable with it, you can’t sketch well, so get a nice chair and put on some favourite music. Find your angle and have your own stuff in reach before start your work. Lastly, place the viewfinder between you and the object and adjust according until you satisfied with it.
Once you have done all the steps that I have mentioned above, do remember to warm up by drawing parallel lines, interesting lines, square in square before you start to sketch. To start off, think of your planned sketch. Visualize it in your mind and rotate it in your brain to better understand what you’ll be sketching and focus on what you are doing. When you start to sketch, start from one side of the object, quickly and lightly take your pencil back and forth on the paper to make soft, light strokes. If you make a mistake, you can easily erase the lines. Therefore, be sure to be constantly looking up at your subject and compare the two. Do not do a blind contour, although this is good for practice sketching but it can deform your sketch. When you’re done, take your eraser and remove the sketchy lines if you wish. Here are some of the tips when you are sketching. For instance, grasp the pencil between your fingers, about 20mm from its tip. Moreover, remember you’re doing a free-hand sketching, so no rules are allowed. Be light on your pencil so you do not ruin your artwork because of those dark lines and do all your verticals at the same time then your horizontal. Last but not least, always remember you must be relaxed about what you are doing and don’t panic if you don’t quite make it.
In a nutshell, these are all the steps involved in producing an attractive sketch from my own opinion and experience. Sketching doesn’t only happen in your work table, it can take place anywhere you need to record something, list an idea or just be inspired by the environment you are in. And last, practice makes perfect. Practice effectively, you can progress much faster than you would have thought possible with much less effort. So, why not start your sketching now?
